Well the blog has been a bit quiet lately so I thought I would jump in and get the ball rolling again. I know that Katie is busy with her new life in Wichita. Beth is busy getting Jacob going on his new education path. Andy too is starting a new education and career path. I am starting to see pattern here. The rest of us are trudging along I think.
I will share a bit of what life has been like for us the past few weeks and that will get the momentum for others to share their stories, hint hint.
Well it all started in July when I was on my way to work, just your average hot Wednesday morning. Anyway in the road I saw this beagle dog just wandering around in the road looking lost and confused, so I stopped. She was whimpering hesitant to come to me but finally did. I called John and told him what was happening. He was like "and you want me to do what?" So I told him to come, which he did bringing a leash, collar, and dog food. We got her in the truck and he took her home. I went to work---as luck would have it my first client didn't show up and didn't call. Anyway John called me a few hours later. He said he had to give her a bath(they were both thrilled). She smelled like the creek and she was infested with ticks. He said the inside of her ears were coated and it was the most disgusting thing he ever saw. Well we pulled 62 ticks off her head and back just in one sitting and that was after the bath. The ears had to be treated to kill the ticks. We called vets, posted her on a lost/found dog website, called rescue groups and put up found dog fliers, no responses. We finally took her to the vet, got her checked for heart worms, vaccinated and spayed. She lives in the basement and is pretty quiet. We have to walk her as she is small and can fit through the pickets of our vinyl fence. Ok surely we can deal with finding a home for one small beagle...oh if only it was only one small beagle.
On Tuesday morning John went for his morning walk up 188th Street when out of nowhere appears this dog, jumping at him and dancing around as if to say"look at me, look at me. I've been waiting for you Alpha John." Well John ignored him and continued on his way hoping the dog would lose interest and go on his merry way,no such luck. Finally John gave up and returned home, unfortunately with Loco Puppy, as we call him, happily following. Well this guy just made himself at home in the backyard on the lower patio by the doors to John's workshop. We thought once again that if we ignored him he would continue on his "walk about" and that would be that, but no he stayed. So John had to build a pen for him in one of the open sheds and now our day consists of putting Loco Puppy in the shed, let Annie and Jack out in their yard, bring Annie and Jack in, walk Trixie, bring Trixie in, let Loco Puppy out to be a free dog. That is life at The Inn on Downing Road, aka The Zoo. So what is new with the rest of you?

I am glad that you posted, Fiddler. Thanks for breaking the ice on a hot summer day!
I am happy to report that Jacob loves school. At least that is what his mommy told me.
I have not started school yet. I am in a holding pattern, just waiting until September 7th arrives, and I start back as a volunteer at Roosevelt Elementary. The Hays Daily News did a story about the first day of school at Roosevelt. The kids attended an assembly and were entertained by staff. The theme for the school year is "the 1950's". Rock music from that era was performed by our custodian, who happens to play a guitar. The newspaper featured photos of him, and also a gym teacher, who had about 3 hoola hoops around her hips. Even when I was a kid, I could not do 3 hoola hoops at the same time. There was also a photo of some students, and I recognized one of the kids I helped last year. He looked happy and healthy. It looks like the school year is off to a good start.
It sounds like life is full at the inn where you live, Fiddler. It is a downer that people dump their pets on Downing Road. I hope a shelter, near you, will be built soon. In the meantime, you have taken on a lot of responsibility. And you take your responsibilities seriously. You go above and beyond what most people would do. I promise to pray for the dogs to St. Francis. Hopefully, they will find forever homes soon. And I will pray for you and John as you care for all your puppies. I congratulate both of you for helping abandoned pets in your area.
Sounds like the dog days of summer at your house. I notice the other day that the humane society here has a dog pantry for people who need help feeding their pents. I know of at least one women who had taken in a stray black lab.She got help from some agency near Topeka that was too over loaded with black labs to take it in so, they brought her food and a dog house so she could take care of it.
Those pups must know that they can trust you and John to love and care for them, and they seek you out. They are so lucky, and you both are so generous! Your animals stories always make me smile. Thank you for sharing them, and thank you for taking such good care of all God's creatures.
Honor, it sounds like things are off to an amazing start at your school. What a great place to teach and learn!
Why do you have to wait until Sept. 7 to start your volunteer work? Just curious. :-)
Katie, my supervising teacher needs time to get to know the kids and establish a routine before her volunteers begin. I am not the only foster grandparent who will start after Labor Day. Many do, because the teachers need time to get acquainted with their students. It does sound like the kids at Roosevelt had a great first day of school. I hope you will blog soon about your experiences in Wichita, Katie. We are glad you are back in Kansas. How is Trent, and how are the Atlanta Braves doing?
That makes good sense, Honor. :-) Thanks for explaining that to me. Trent's doing all right, and the Braves are still in first place. Woohoo. We hope they'll make the play-offs, which would translate into a bonus for Braves employees.
