sage advice

Live in rooms full of light
avoid heavy food (avoid McDonalds and other fast and or fried food)
be moderate in the drinking of wine
take massage, bath, exercise and gymnastics
fight insomnia with gentle rocking or the sound of running water
change surroundings and take long journeys(vacations)
strictly avoid frightening ideas (avoid Fox News)
indulge in cheerful conversation and amusements
listen to music
---A. Cornelius Celsus 25BC -AD50

Celsus was known for extant medical work---De Medicina the only surviving section of a much larger encyclopedia. De Medicina is a primary source on diet, pharmacy and surgery and is one of the best sources of medical knowledge in the Roman world. It is not believed that he was a doctor.

I found his advice and observations very interesting. Why are we always trying to reinvent the wheel or better yet, why are we always breaking the wheel?

The wisdom of the ages stands firm. Thanks for sharing this advice. i like the part about taking long vacations. Kansas City will be a welcome change in a few weeks, although things are going well in Hays.

I think you should post this at Quiet Moments, or put it on your website, Fiddler. Massage has always been part of a healthy, balanced life. Who can dismiss the wisdom of the ages?

Thanks for sharing this, M. I just read an article that even though more people are exercising, we're also becoming more obese. (Probably more stressed too.)

Celcus's wisdom has stood the test of time. Too bad we keep ignoring it ... or trying to find a way around it.

All of these tips are pretty easily accomplished ... even vacations. Most of us can take a vacation from the television and go for a walk, do some yoga, read a book, call a friend, etc. A vacation doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor ... just a change in your surroundings or routine.
