Saturday,January 9th, 2010 was an enjoyable day for me, in spite of the cold. I was able to start and drive my car for the first time in several days. I kept close to home when the temperatures became so bitterly cold. I stayed home from school last Thursday. I did go on Friday but I rode the bus.
On Saturday morning I cleaned my car windows, thoroughly warmed up my car, and drove to the library to attend a vegan meeting. Members of the Western Kansas Vegan Society learned how to make macaroni and cheese without using cheese. We sampled the pasta dish and it was delicious. How does one replace the cheese? Ground cashew nuts and nutritional yeast mixed with other ingredients can produce a cheesy flavor.
After the meeting, I drove to Semolino's and ordered a scone and a pot of black jasmine tea. The tea was served in a glass pot so that I could see the jasmine inside it. I saluted Mom with my steaming cup of tea and wished her Happy Birthday!
I went shopping at Walmart, and later went shopping with a friend. Doug and I watched Julia and Julia with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. The movie tells the story of Chef Julia Child and a woman admirer who spends a year making every recipe in Julia Child's book. I think Mom would have enjoyed that movie because she enjoyed cooking and eating a well planned meal.
I also surfed the web this weekend and found some delicious sounding recipes. I tried a cream of potato and broccoli soup recipe earlier this week and it hit the spot.
Today I am in the process of making whole wheat bread. Making and eating homemade bread is very satisfying. I hope the bread turns out well. It has almost raised enough to be punched down and placed in bread pans. Then the dough will raise again. I should get 2 loafs of bread from this recipe. It is a recipe that Doug's grandmother used when she was alive. She baked this bread often, and made open faced cheese sandwiches with it to serve to guests at "coffeee time."
I thought a lot about Mother this past week. I recall a few of her sayings:
Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
You'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
Bloom where you are planted.
Take time to smell the roses.
All of these sayings contain good advice which any mom can share with her children.
I hope my Fiddler Kin spent a pleasant weekend. Even though I miss Mom, I enjoyed Mom's birthday weekend.

Honor your so interesting with the things you do. The tea and scones sound wonderful. Wouldn't it be fun to have a tea shop?
It would be fun to own a tea shop and a LOT of work. We could make up our own tea recipes. Grandma Consier used three different kinds of tea to make the tea she brewed every day. She was very particular about it. She made a pot of tea and a snack every afternoon. Afternoon tea was a tradition the grandkids got to enjoy if they were visiting. I think your cranberry scones would be a hit if you opened a business. Maybe you could figure out a way to package a scone mix. Anyway, a tea shop would be in keeping with our English tradition. Both Grandma and Grandpa were in the food servive industry. And Grandma's family owned a pub. Tea and scones are in our genes. Our DNA demands that we open a tea shop. Just say where and when...
sounds good to me. I love your memories Honor I have no recollection of tea in the afternoon with grandma. The only thing I think I remember was putting milk in the tea and pouring it into a saucer. Do you remember anything like that? Maybe we could have a virtual tea shop. We could have a blog about tea, read books about tea and tea mystery books, I think there is a series, and discuss them. I have instructiions for an orgami tea pot.
l'd love to learn about orgami tea pots. Doug makes orgami boxes. I would enjoy planning virtual tea parties and reading tea centered blogs, novels, etc. What is the mystery series you referred to? I don't know it.
I remember that sometimes Grandpa poured his tea in a saucer to cool it faster. He actually drank it out of a saucer. That was fine with Grandma at home, but She did not want "Billy" or "William" to do it in public.
Grandpa Consier did not care what people thought about his behavior. The day he got his new dentures, Grandma planned to meet him at a restaurant. When she arrived, Grandpa was already there. Much to her surprise, people were laughing at him. The new dentures hurt, so Grandpa had taken them out of his mouth and placed them on the table. Grandma was embarrassed and let Grandpa know it!
Ok you tea lovers, here is a link to Anna Marie's tea shop in Liberty. She has tea party events; perhaps some of the Fiddler Kin would like to have a tea outing. It is also a little B&B too, but it is really known for it's tea events.
http://www.annateashop.com/events.html
Thanks Fiddler for the information. I went to the site, but I had to eliminate the /event part of the address to get to it. There is a lot of good information on that website. It sounds like some delicious teas are brewed and sold at Anna's Tea Shop. There are also pictures of the B&B, some recipes, and a preview of upcoming events. I would like to try the chocolate apricot tea.
Have you attended any of the events or eaten the food at Anna's Tea Shop, Fiddler?
The tea shop sounds like a lot of fun & I would be willing to go check it out. Thanks for sharing it with us, Fiddler.
Good to hear from you Beth. It would be fun to plan an event at a tea shop. The one in Liberty sounds good. Liberty is an interesting town. We would have to pick a time of year when the weather is better for travel. I hope we can find a convenient time for everyone to attend.
Anna Marie's Tea Shop.
Ok here is what I propose, if we can pick one of the public tea parties that we all agree on then we could attend one at 2:30pm on a Saturday, then afterward go up to Kearney and I could give little mini-upper body massages or foot massages to everyone, we could sit out on the deck, have dinner and everyone could spend the night, although you might want to bring sleeping bags. The upstairs bed can accommodate two people, if you don't mind sharing, the basement couch pulls out into a sleeper that can accommodate two people and then the couch in the living room can accommodate one person. Sunday morning we could go over to Watkins Mill for a walk and have breakfast. Any thoughts?
I'd loved to do this Margaret it sound relaxing. Just what we need, a break from a long cold winter. Plus it gives us something to look forward too. Honor how do you remeber all this things it's like meeting them (grandma & grandpa) for the first time. For the books go to Amazon.com and type in, tea shop mystery, or laura Childs. You could also just type in the word tea and find some really interesting books.
Honor, I love your post, and I love this scintillating conversation about tea, tea shops, scones, and a trip to Kearney. My Fiddler Kin are awesome in their celebration of their kinship!!
Hello,
The invite to Meg's sounds delightful.....a spot of tea at the tea room and then on to Kearney for an evening of conversation and laughs.Ellen
