Hey, ya'll.
What's shakin'? How are my Fiddler Kin in the Midwest? How's new baby Isaiah? What about cutie pie Jacob?
Things are fine here. Trent should learn the date of his shoulder surgery in the next few days; it's been a slllloooooooww process with the government, but he's been keeping tabs on all the paperwork and making several calls a day to his doctor, the Department of Labor, and a third-party billing/processing company. In fact, his birthday (yesterday) was filled with such calls.
Teaching continues to go well this summer. My students are smart, and their writing fills me with joy. The grading and responding is time-consuming, but at least it's good reading.
Two Saturdays ago, Trent's friend Marcus joined us for a bike ride and grilling on the back porch, and last Saturday, I went for a bike ride with my friend Jen and then had some girlfriends over for our almost-monthly girls' night. I made tabbouleh, brushetta, and fresh fruit salad. One of my friends brought homemade hummus; I'm seriously thinking about getting a food processor so I can make my own hummus too. It was a tasty meal.
I'm also back to playing the piano after acquiring a digital piano a few weeks ago. Yay!
Trent's at the end of a 10-game homestand and (supposedly) doesn't have to work this weekend. I'm looking forward to spending some time with him ... a picnic and fireworks, perhaps, on Saturday.
I hope you all are well.

Katie, sounds like you are doing pretty well. You'll enjoy making your own hummus. It tastes so much better than store bought & so easy to make. Once I started making my own I couldn't get enough. Peter says I'm an addict, but it is sooo good. I don't have a food processor so I just make it in my kitchenaid food chopper. It works pretty well.
Happy Fourth of July. I just returned to Hays from Emporia today. Beth and I had a lot of fun. She made hummus while I was there. She also introduced me to to sushi. Good sushi. Emporia has a new Italian restaurant, the Italian Garden. The food is great. I spent time with Carol and Tom on Friday when the three of us went to Lawrence. On Friday night Beth and I saw The Proposal. We really liked it!!!
I hope Trent's surgery goes well. How many trees do we cut down each year to please the Bureacrats?
The digital piano sounds like fun. Enjoy the picnic and fireworks. You have been working very hard and deserve a break. Once again, good luck to Trent.
Katie you might add a little tahini(sesame paste) to your hummus. We buy a nice brand at the middle eastern store in Lenexa. Also if you ever don't have time to make hummus a really good brand is Sabra I think. We buy the one with roasted garlic. It has tahini in it too. We love hummus. I slice up some pita bread into triangles, put some hummus on top then saute some red onion and red peppers in a pan put them on top of the hummus add a few almond slivers to each triangle and put under the broiler just until the almonds are golden. It is a meal in itself or a nice appetizer. I have also been taking flour tortillas and cutting them into triangle and putting them under the broiler until slightly golden then turn them and brown the other side to a golden color. They make a nice dipping chip for salsa or hummus or tahini. I don't use any oil, but I guess you could brush some on before broiling. Katie and Beth post your recipes. They sound really good.
Honor it sounds like you had a perfect vacation, time with Jacob and Beth and Peter, Sushi, italian, movies, hummus and a trip to Lawrence. It sounds just about perfect. Rest up and enjoy your Sunday. We have a bike ride planned and a trip to Watkins Mill for a walk with Annie and Scout who is visiting to get a break from the fireworks although I don't know what is worse fireworks or psycho Jack, or as Sharon put it, he either gets firecrackers or crackerjack. Right now all is quiet. They are both in their respective crates. Jack is giving Scout the evil eye and Scout is sleeping. Oblivion is bliss.
Margaret! Thanks for your reply, too. I'll have to try the tahini, too.
Cracker jack--ha ha! That's too funny! I hope you had a nice bike ride. It's raining here, so no biking for us.
I love Scout's attitude. He does not know what a crackerjack Jack is!!! The sauted onion and red peppers sound delicious. You are so creative Fiddler.
