a little goes a long long way

Do not, no never ever , stop immediately, don' do it ever, build a pond in your backyard! What a job. water water everywhere and no place for it to go. Who would have believed that this stupid little pond could have more water in it then it could hold. We tried to drain it but it keeps coming we have managed to make a pond on the field to the south us, not that they didn't have one already, we just made it bigger. The problem is the city has not provided an adequate drainage system so it doesn't have any flow to it that's worth a hoot. So I guess we need professional help or our heads examined. I hope we don't get in to trouble with anybody because of this. We aren't spring chickens. This pond is zapping us physically. The ditch from the pond to the street is about 300 feet. We did OK until we got into tree roots, Matthew snap his shovel in two, plus laying the pipe is about 10.00 per 10 feet. yiks! And now it's rainning. I'm sure the neighbors are having a good laugh. We were out trying finish this trench we dug but the last 10ft have been horrible. Our shoes are so weight down with mud you can hardly move and that wet clay dirt weights a ton to try and shovel. God help us. That's all I can say.

I wish I could do something to help you. I do not know an expert whom you could call. Would the extension office have information about ponds? Don't give up hope. Maybe other readers will have helpful information. I am sorry you have this struggle in your life now. I hope it stops raining soon and things will dry out.

Carol,
Your water feature is overwhelming you.....and I am sorry; I know how much you wanted the pond.
I hope you get some sunny relief from this watery disaster. Once things dry out you will be able to get a better fix on this...if you fill in the pond make sure the slope is not toward your house. We know the acting city engineer, Mike Novak. He lives in Lenexa (was the city engineer) but commutes to Emporia weekly. He and his wife are friends of ours. He is a good person and may be able to offer ideas if the city gets involved....
Good luck,
keep us posted.

Yikes! What an adventure, Carol. I'm glad you're taking time to write about it. Perhaps one day you'll look back on your overflowing pond and laugh ... or grimace.

Thanks for keeping us updated, and I hope sunny weather comes your way soon.

Take pictures! I know that from your perspective this is not funny, but you know that saying about not being able to see the forest for the trees, or in your case the the pond for the ocean, anyway I hope that you will one day be able to look back on this and laugh. Do you think your property could be on an underground spring? Well anyway I admire your work ethic. I would have pooped out after 15 minutes and I am sure John and I wouldn't be speaking to each other, so this says a lot for the relationship the 3 of you have with each other. Take care, take a hot bath and visualize the desert.
