Cat Scratch Fever

Here's a delightful story for all of you cat-lovers and cat-haters out there ...

Sal (our feisty orange cat) took a bite of my face on Saturday. My right cheek, to be precise. Her top and bottom incisors on one side broke the skin, so I had both a cut and a puncture wound. I cleaned them up, iced them, and put Neosporin on them. Yummy.

By Tuesday, the cuts had healed, but in their place, I had a nasty rash. When I visited my doctor on Thursday (rash still there), she told me that cats have weird toxins or something in their teeth, which can cause this kind of reaction. And (scary music), it can spread!!! She gave me some antibiotics, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my leprosy does not spread over my entire face. So far, it's not spreading, but it's also not going away.

Anybody else ever had this experience with vampire cat bites? Do share.

A janitor where I once worked was bitten by a cat. He ended up in the hospital with a very bad infection. He spiked a high fever and was very sick. It is important to keep in contact with your Doctor. I am sorry that Sal bit you. Take care of yourself.

Hi, you two. I have no idea why she bit me. She didn't appear to be in a bad mood, and I wasn't tormenting her (only Trent does that). It was so bizarre and unexpected. I've been keeping my face a safe distance from hers lately, and I don't think I've held her since the incident.

I'll definitely stay in contact with my doc if the rash doesn't improve on this first round of antibiotics. Other than this splotch of redness on my face, I feel fine--thank goodness.

Thanks, you two!

Hi Katie,
Cat bites are dangerous. An infection on your face can spread to your brain. Keep Sal quarantined indoors...rabies is a concern.
See your doctor for followup immediately if you do not heal
100%.
love ya,
mom

I think my brain has already been affected. Maybe I can use this as an excuse not to finish my portfolio ...

I'll let you know what my department chair says. :)

Katie, you might want to have Sal checked just to make sure she is not ill and or in pain somewhere which triggered her bite, also you photograph her a lot and maybe if the camera flashes she doesn't like it and is associating the flash with you and again acting out at what she considers the source---you. As has been mentioned animal, especially cat bites/scratches can be serious business. Keep us posted.

katie, I have had halo sink her teeth into me lots of times. It causes welting and itching like a rash. I put benadryl gel on it and it goes away. you might also want to see a dermatologist. keep seeing your doctor. Cats are unpredictable. Halo is most aggressive when she senses something in her territory she doesn't like.
